Interesting, he thought, striking a match and putting the flame to a corner of the paper. Well, at least he was finally getting out of this godforsaken shithole of a city. He sat for a moment wondering what happened to compromise his mission.

His escape plan had already been set up. He would alert the U-boat at the next scheduled contact and arrange for pickup once he finished with his second task—to take care of the Irishmen: Iain Kelly and Sean O’Toole.

Suddenly, there was a soft knock on the door. He instinctively pulled his gun free and stood up, putting his back to the wall.

“Yes?” he called out.

“It’s me, Clarise. Are you alone?” a woman’s voice sounded from behind the door.

He re-holstered the gun and placed his jacket over the chair back, covering the holster.

“Come in,” he said, opening the door.

Clarise Halford stood there barefoot, wearing a housecoat. She was in her late thirties, maybe early forties and still fairly attractive. Her husband was overseas with one of the Canadian infantry regiments stationed in England. They didn’t have any children, so she lived alone. She decided to open her home and rented out a room. It didn’t take him long to seduce her.

“I thought I heard sounds, so I guessed you were in.”

“Sounds?” he said, looking carefully at her.

“Uh-huh. Kind of like beeps or something,” she said, going over to the bed and sitting on the edge, letting the housecoat fall open, exposing her legs almost to her pelvis. He noticed she wasn’t wearing any underwear.

“Oh, that. It was just my travel clock’s alarm,” he said, stepping over to her slowly unbuttoning his shirt. Her eyes watched him as he undid them. He saw the hunger in them. When he reached the bed and stood in front of her, she moved her hands up to his belt buckle. A moment later, he felt the cool air on his manhood as it fell free, then the warmth of her lips and mouth.

Thirty minutes later, they were lying naked next to each other, their bodies bathed in perspiration. She lay cuddled tightly against his side, her hand softly stroking him.

It was unfortunate she heard him on the radio. He couldn’t leave her behind where the authorities might question her about him. What a waste, he thought as he slowly eased himself away from her.

“What’s the matter?” she asked softly as she instinctively pulled the bed cover over her nakedness.

“Nothing,” he said, bending down and kissing her lightly on the lips. He reached for his pillow and when he broke off the kiss, looked down. Her eyes were closed. Her lips curved in a hint of a smile.

“Come back to bed,” she whispered.

He positioned the pillow over her head, driving it down with both hands covering her face, leaning all his weight on the pillow. He looked away as she struggled against the pressure, kicking the bedclothes all over the bed. Within a matter of several moments she succumbed, and her legs twitched one last time.
